Position Summary 

The Webmaster & Junior Web Developer Assistant is a hands-on technical support role responsible for assisting with the daily operation, maintenance, and expansion of CrossExamined’s web ecosystem. 

This role supports multiple website properties and assists with tasks such as site builds, page creation, content publishing, technical maintenance, and HelpDesk ticket resolution. The assistant works under the guidance of the Web Design & Development Manager and helps execute defined technical processes and standard operating procedures (SOPs). 

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically capable, and able to reliably execute web tasks while continuing to develop their technical skills. 

Note: This is not a marketing or SEO role. The focus is webmaster operations, development assistance, infrastructure support, and technical troubleshooting. 

Key Responsibilities 

Web Strategy & Leadership 

  • Assist with implementing the web strategy and digital experience roadmap for CrossExamined’s online platforms. 
  • Identify opportunities to improve website functionality, user engagement, and digital outreach. 
  • Align website initiatives with the ministry’s content, marketing, fundraising, and event strategies. 
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies, tools, and platforms that enhance digital impact. 
     

Website Design & User Experience 

  • Lead the design of visually compelling and user-friendly web experiences. 
  • Create and oversee UX/UI improvements that make content easier to discover and engage with. 
  • Develop wireframes, prototypes, and design systems for new features and site enhancements. 
  • Ensure consistent branding and design standards across all digital properties. 
  • Oversee development and maintenance of websites using modern web technologies. 
  • Implement or supervise development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and CMS platforms (such as WordPress). 
  • Ensure sites are mobile-responsive, accessible, and optimized for performance. 
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and coordinate solutions. 

Website Operations & Content Management 

  • Build and maintain new websites and web properties as needed. 
  • Create and manage pages, posts, and site structures. 
  • Publish content according to internal standards and documented SOPs. 
  • Maintain consistency across layouts, components, and site behavior. 
  • Perform QA checks on content, layouts, and functionality before and after publishing. 
  • Support ongoing site expansion and restructuring efforts. 
  • Monitor and improve website performance, traffic, and engagement metrics. 
  • Implement SEO best practices and site performance optimization. 
  • Use analytics tools to evaluate user behavior and guide digital improvements. 
  • Develop dashboards or reports to track digital effectiveness. 

HelpDesk & Technical Support 

  • Monitor and respond to HelpDesk tickets related to websites and web systems. 
  • Troubleshoot site errors, broken functionality, and user-reported issues. 
  • Resolve access, permission, and account-related web issues. 
  • Escalate critical issues appropriately and document resolutions. 
  • Provide reliable, professional technical support to internal teams. 

Performance, Backups & Security 

  • Execute and verify routine backup processes. 
  • Assist with site performance tuning and optimization best practices. 
  • Apply updates and patches in a controlled, safe manner. 
  • Monitor security alerts and assist with mitigation and recovery. 
  • Follow documented incident response and rollback procedures. 

Development & Integrations 

  • Write and maintain custom code for site functionality. 
  • Build and support API integrations and webhook-based workflows. 
  • Assist with automation tied to web systems and internal tools. 
  • Debug and resolve front-end and backend issues. 

Web Development & Technical Oversight 

  • PHP.. 
  • JavaScript 
  • HTML / CSS. 
  • REST APIs & Webhooks. 
  • SQL (basic to intermediate). 
  • Version control (Git or equivalent). 

Process, Documentation & SOP Compliance 

  • Follow internal SOPs precisely and consistently 
  • Execute tasks independently once instructions are provided 
  • Document changes, fixes, and decisions when required 
  • Proactively identify risks, bugs, or system issues 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • 2+ years experience in web design, development, or digital product management. 
  • Experience leading or managing web projects or digital initiatives. 
  • Strong understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern web development practices. 
  • Experience working with WordPress or similar CMS platforms. 
  • Experience with UX/UI design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch. 
  • Knowledge of SEO, analytics, and website performance optimization. 
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities. 
     

Preferred 

  • Experience with PHP, React, or modern JavaScript frameworks. 
  • Experience managing vendors or development contractors. 
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG). 
  • Experience in nonprofit, ministry, media, or education organizations. 
  • Understanding of digital marketing and online fundraising systems.
